Monster Hunter: World on PC August 9

On January 26, 2018, Capcom released one of the most anticipated games of 2017: Monster Hunter: World. It was released for this generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles with the promise of a PC launch in the fall. A press release from Capcom revealed August 9 as the long-awaited date PC gamers were hoping for.

A little over a month after the initial release of Monster Hunter: World, it became Capcom’s best-selling game of all time, surpassing 7.5 million units sold. Since then, the game has sold around 400,000 more copies and will likely sell another couple million by October. The game has even become the second-most sold game on the PlayStation 4, trailing only Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. This is remarkable considering that Uncharted 4 owes a lot of its success to console purchases. Remember how Wii Sports sold 82.85 million copies? Remember how it came with every new Wii system? Yeah, same kind of deal with Uncharted, but on a smaller scale. To put the success of Monster Hunter: World into perspective, it’s numbers are nearly twice that of any other Monster Hunter title and 1.6 million greater than any Street Fighter title.

However, there is still a gaping hole in Monster Hunter: World’s demographic. It came as a huge shocker when it was initially announced that the game would not be released on any Nintendo consoles. Since the tail end of the 2000s, Monster Hunter has found a home with Nintendo, specifically on the 3DS. Leaving Nintendo fans out of the mix is a decision that seems to be haunting Capcom in the form of complaints and despair among fans. Haruhiro Tsujimoto, president of Capcom, expressed a concern for the situation back in February but ultimately left us with little hope for a port to the Nintendo Switch.

With every event in the video game industry, there are questions that arise. The question with this new release date is whether or not Nintendo Monster Hunter fans will be willing to make the transition to PC in a month. While “yes” seems like an easy enough answer, Monster Hunter on PC has only been done once, and this was exclusively in the eastern hemisphere. There’s a subjective nature to the quality of Monster Hunter on PC, but if we’ve learned one thing about PC gaming over the years, it’s that a keyboard drastically changes the gameplay dynamic of just about any game.

With or without a large migration from Nintendo to PC, Monster Hunter: World will continue to do what it seems to do best: sell and entertain. It can be pre-purchased in the Steam store today and will hit game libraries across the globe on August 9. It would appear that the minimum requirements for the game aren’t excessively high but it will require a decent rig to play.

Hopefully, not too many people will lose out on the opportunity to experience Monster Hunter: World because of system requirements. As someone who personally used to do all of his PC gaming on a $250 Acer laptop, I think it’s fair to say that even people who don’t meet the requirements will find themselves purchasing it anyway for the experience.
