Treyarch Now Making Black Ops 5 for 2020

Treyarch is taking the reigns on Call of Duty once more. Published by Activision, the series has become an annual franchise, not unlike Madden over the years. 2020’s installment, originally headed by Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games, will now be taken over by Treyarch with the other two studios taking on smaller roles.


The development of the franchise is scattered around, so let’s go through some background information. Treyarch’s first stab at it was all the way back in 2005 for Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, and they’ve worked with Activision in this capacity ever since. They’ve since added Call of Duty 3, World at War, and the entire Black Ops series to their resume. As for Sledgehammer, this 2020 project will be the company’s fourth game, the other three being Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and WWII. Sledgehammer is the subsidiary of Activision, and their sole purpose so far has been to add to the Call of Duty brand. Raven Software has a bit of a unique relationship with the series. While most people recognize Infinity Ward (the OG COD developers), Treyarch, and Sledgehammer, many don’t know that Raven has been involved with these teams for nearly nine years. They have been assistant developers on every main game in the franchise since the original Black Ops. They’ve also headed the development of Modern Warfare Remastered, Call of Duty Online, and DLC for multiple titles.


With all of this being said, the different developers have some extended ties to each other, including Sledgehammer’s collaboration with Infinity Ward on MW3. From all of this has stemmed a working relationship between Raven and Sledgehammer that is said to be tense and fraught with arguments. This has led to Treyarch’s intervention. It feels almost like a parent stepping in between two brawling younger siblings. Now that they’ve taken over, this upcoming game is slated to be Black Ops 5. Reports suggest that the game will take place in the Cold War, and this indicates that Black Ops is back to featuring campaigns, something that many fans will be excited about.
