New Pokemon Trailer Introduces Gigantamaxing and New Gyms

The official Pokemon Sword and Shield site dropped a new trailer as well as a number of new articles full of information, so let’s get started:

New Pokemon

Alcremie, a fairy type. It’s a whipped cream pokemon with strawberries.

Yamper, electric type. It’s a cute puppy. It also has a useful ability; if you fail to catch a pokemon while it’s on the field, it will retrieve the first pokeball that fails.

Rolycoly, rock type. It’s a… pile of coal. Looks like we were all on the naughty list this year.

Duraludon, steel/dragon type. Looks very sleek and crystalline, and is a good candidate for the regions pseudo-legendary pokemon.

Previous pseudo-legendary pokemon have been confirmed to appear as well, this time as version exclusives. Deino and Jangmo-o are only in Sword, while Larvitar and Goomy are Shield exclusive.

Gyms

For the first time, ever, Pokemon Sword/Shield will have version exclusive gyms. Pokemon Sword will have fighting-type leader Bea, and Pokemon Shield will have ghost-type leader Allister. So far, no other gyms are confirmed to be version exclusive, although only two other gyms are known as of yet. We also have a champion confirmed: Leon! Leon won the first ever gym challenge in Galar and was undefeated since, becoming its first and only champion.

Two other gym-related characters were introduced as well: Chairman Rose and his secretary Oleana. Rose runs a large entertainment conglomerate which introduced dynamax to the league and broadcasts gym battles worldwide. He also originally endorsed Leon for his gym challenge. I smell a potential twist villain, but only time will tell.

Gigantamax

Building on the Dynamax feature revealed earlier, certain pokemon will also be able to go Gigantamax. This feature seems to be a combination of mega evolution from generation 6 and the z-moves from generation 7. Gigantamax pokemon will be monstrously big, have increased stats, and will be able to use exclusive Gigantamax moves. The trailer showed what appeared to be Alcremie or part of its evolutionary line Gigantamaxing into a giant wedding cake. Special Gigantamax pokemon can only be caught during special raid battles, and so far only Alcremie, Dreadnaw, and Corviknight have been confirmed for this feature.

Take my Money

For two friends or siblings who want to split the price, or avid fans who want both games, Nintendo’s offering a Sword/Shield double pack that contains both games for the price of $119.99. This would cover the regular cost of buying each individually, but this version has the added bonus of allowing you to face down Larvitar and Jangmo-o in raid battles, allowing you to obtain both pokemon in the early game regardless of version exclusivity.

Preordering the game can also get you a plush keychain of one of the starters, while downloading the game before January 15 will get you 12 quick balls for use in the game.

The trailer can be seen below, although more information is available on the official site linked above.
