Plants vs. Zombies 3 is Coming to Pick Your Brains

Hot off the heels of the 10th anniversary of the franchise, PopCap Games recently announced that Plants vs. Zombies 3 is under development. Not only that, they want to extend the garden party to players immediately in the form of a free-to-play Pre-Alpha of the game which is available to download via the Google Play Store right now. You’ll need a Galaxy S7 or anything with higher specs running at least Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). Sadly, the Pre-Alpha isn’t available for iOS users.

Developer PopCap is using this Pre-Alpha as a means of getting player feedback from the community with the quirky request “Lend us Your Brains”. Don’t despair if you don’t get into the Pre-Alpha, access to the game is being rolled out in phases as there’s only a limited number of downloads each day. I personally wasn’t lucky enough to get onto the alpha today, but if you hammer away at that download button regularly you might get a shot at playing.

Presently, there’s no official word on how the game will be monetized. Playing the Pre-Alpha is free and there will be no microtransactions in this early build, but beyond that there’s no comment. The microtransactions in Plants vs. Zombies 2 rubbed a lot of players the wrong way and an early screenshot of PvZ 3 implies there could be multiple forms of in-game currencies appearing as gems and coins.

PopCap was quick to mention that everything present in the Pre-Alpha won’t necessarily represent the final game, so bear in mind that everything is subject to change (including this wacky new art style). With no confirmed release date, there’s all the time in the world to polish up this game.

Time will tell if this third installment can still capture the magic of the original game. Will you be checking out the Pre-Alpha? If you’ve already played it, what are your thoughts? We’d love to hear your responses in the comments.
