Announced in a tweet from the official Pokemon twitter account, we’ll be receiving news about the upcoming main series Pokemon games, Sword and Shield on August 7th (two days from now!) at 6 AM PDT (9 AM EST, 2 PM GMT). The tweet said nothing on what said news would be, but the tweet had the header “galar research update”, and featured a gif of the player character walking into a gym.
I’ll now blindly speculate about what this news could be. We received another direct earlier this month that featured four new pokemon, version-exclusive gyms, the champion, and a new feature called “Gigantamaxing”. The “research update” might mean we’ll learn more about this Gigantamax feature, including a few pokemon capable of performing it and maybe even see part of a gym battle featuring it. It could also mean we’ll see new Galar pokemon, maybe even mythical pokemon. The mythical pokemon felt weaker in generations 6 and 7, especially when compared to generations 4 and 5, so it’d be nice to see more focus put on them.
At the Nintendo Treehouse presentation during E3, we received news that the only pokemon available in Sword and Shield would be those in the Galar dex, meaning that if a pokemon doesn’t make the cut, they will be unavailable in SW/SH through any means. This direct could show us some of the pokemon from generations 1-6 who will appear in Galar, so here’s hoping our favorites get in. There’s also been hopes that Nintendo may have a post-launch update that will add pokemon into the game, and while nothing about this has been confirmed yet (please do not walk away from the article treating this as fact), this would be as good a time as any to announce anything of the sort that’s in the works. Plenty of fans aren’t happy with this news, and it’d be in Nintendo’s interest to do damage control pre-release.
