Developed by French studio Spiders and published by Focus Home Interactive, GreedFall is an action RPG inspired by colonial America. With that being said, GreedFall still contains elements of classic fantasy like magic and creatures of all shapes and sizes. The most recent trailer gives us an overview of these elements and what the moment to moment gameplay for GreedFall is going to be like.
The latest trailer has plenty to show us, with character customization being a particular focus. Players will have the option to choose from three major classes those being Warrior, Technical and Magic. However, this won’t tie you down to one set of abilities, with the option to branch out to any of the three skill trees available. Equipment is also shown to be heavily customizable in GreedFall, right down to choosing the look of the pommel and guard on your sword.
GreedFall takes place on the island of Tar Fradee, a land that has recently been discovered by the powerful nations of the world. These nations struggle for control of the newly discovered land while the natives try to repel the invaders. Players will have the option to side with multiple factions, with the natives being one of them. As I’m sure you can tell GreedFall has some not so subtle parallels to our world.
Perhaps one of the game’s most interesting features is how party members interact with one another. Companions are shown to sometimes have conflict, leaving the player to keep the peace. This is a feature present in older DnD inspired games most notably Baldur’s Gate but hasn’t made much of an appearance in recent RPG titles. It will be interesting to see how in-depth this part of the character interaction can get.
Previous RPG titles by Spiders such as Bound by Flame and The Technomancer haven’t been very well received. On both occasions, critics have remarked that the games feel too simplistic with a lack of originality. This has left some people unsure of how GreedFall will turn out. Others are confident in the game, feeling that Spiders has learned from its previous mistakes.
GreedFall launches for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on September 10th. Do you think it looks promising? Let us know down in the comments!
