Pokemon Sword and Shield Preview – PAX West 2019

One word: beautiful. Being a Pokemon fan since before I was out of diapers, I was once again blown away by how amazing this new game looks. Pokemon Sword and Shield release on the Nintendo Switch on November 15th of this year. If you have never played a Pokemon game, you should at least play this for some fluffy corgi butt. All jokes aside, Nintendo takes the stage once again with their upcoming release.

Nintendo had a booth at PAX West this year, where they showcased their demo. The demo consisted of getting through the water type gym, fighting various trainers, and solving the puzzle needed to grant access to the gym leader. One thing worth noting is how trainers can see you at an angle, whereas they used to only be able to see you in one of the four cardinal directions. This makes sneaking past them a little trickier, but who isn’t up for a little extra challenge?

The puzzle before the gym leader had the player turning different-colored valves to take water from one place and put it in a different spot. This left you figuring out which valve changed the water on which side all while battling trainers. After outsmarting the water and gaining the privilege to fight the gym leader, you walk through a small tunnel and end up in the middle of an actual stadium.

Since the water gym was the gym you were in, you battle gym leader Nessa and her two pokemon. Her pokemon partners are Goldeen and Drednaw. Meanwhile, your pokemon partners are Scorbunny, Grookey, Wooloo, Corviknight, Yamper, and Sobble. In this new game, there is this cool feature called dynamaxing. Basically, you get the chance to mega-size your Pokemon and boost your new attacks. The catch is you can only do this once per battle and only for three turns.

After defeating Nessa, the demo ends and you are awarded a pin set of the three starters. Definitely try this game when it comes out. Feel free to check out our footage of the demo here and let us know what you think. Gotta catch ’em all!
