Multiplayer Axed In The Last of Us Part 2, May Return as Standalone Title

Factions MP, The Last of Us’s original multiplayer mode, boasted exhilarating combat and original mechanics that earned it an extremely dedicated fan-base. Following the recent release date announcement for The Last of Us Part II, fans of Factions were hungry to learn more about the game’s online offerings. Sadly, many were left disappointed when Naughty Dog, and later Sony, officially confirmed that The Last of Us Part II will not include a multiplayer mode.

This naturally comes as a bit of a surprise seeing as multiplayer was openly discussed by the developers to be a part of the game at E3 2018. Fortunately, it’s not all bad news. Naughty Dog tweeted out an update regarding the state of multiplayer mode to reassure fans that Factions would be making a return somewhere down the line. The statement reads ‘…You will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II. When and where it’ll be realized is still to be determined.’ So, while the mode is coming, we can only speculate as to how the mode will manifest itself in the future.

Based on their language, it sounds like the multiplayer likely won’t be bundled in as DLC for the game. Instead, it seems more plausible that Factions could make a comeback as a standalone title.

While this news initially comes as a shock, Naughty Dog’s decision to separate the single-player and the multiplayer is ultimately a good call. Both modes now have the time and space to be developed into products that’ll fulfill the hopes of gamers. Fans of Factions have also been very understanding following Naughty Dog’s statement. If anything, the thirst for The Last of Us’s multiplayer has only grown as a result of this new story, and we can’t wait to see what Factions will evolve into.
