Conan O’Brien and Otter Costume Appear in Death Stranding

Just as we thought there couldn’t possibly be any more tricks up Death Stranding’s sleeve, Hideo Kojima officially introduced a new character to the game: talk show funnyman Conan O’Brein.

To prove that this is not a mistimed April Fools joke, here’s the trailer:

Death Stranding includes the likenesses and voice talents of many celebrities including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and even games journalist Geoff Keighley. Now, Conan O’Brien joins the roster as ‘The Wandering MC’ – a prepper you’ll make deliveries to throughout the game. He greets you wearing an otter hood while dispensing witty facts about everyone’s favourite water mammal: “The otter is a member of the weasel family. I have weasels in my family, but enough about my Brother!” His dialogue is 50% grin-inducing, 50% cringe-worthy, and 100% pure Kojima.

If you do the Wandering MC enough favors he’ll gift you the adorable otter costume, which gives the player the ability to traverse rivers and rapids with ease – with the added benefit of looking and acting like an otter while swimming. In a game all about reforming and reconnecting the USA, it feels oddly apt that this cute costume lets you become one with nature as you watch Sam drift gracefully downstream.

While certain corners of the internet are likely squealing with joy over Conan’s inclusion, others could find the addition of yet another celebrity likeness to be immersion shattering. Will Conan’s inclusion prove to be endearing or distracting? Guess we’ll find out when Death Stranding releases on November 8th.
