Fire Emblem’s Byleth and Cuphead Mii Costume Join Smash

At last, we finally know who will be the 5th and final character released in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Fighters Pass. Mr. Sakurai revealed in a video presentation today that Byleth, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses will join the roster on January 28th. Additionally, there were a few more welcome surprises tucked away in this presentation…

If you want all the news straight from the horse’s mouth then here’s the full video:

If you include echo fighters, Byleth is the 8th character from Fire Emblem to join the roster, but remarkably, they play fairly differently to all the others. Byleth has a sword, lance, axe, and bow tucked up their sleeves, making them a versatile fighter. Underneath their scrawny appearance, Byleth actually shares mobility and characteristics with Smash’s heavy hitters. Moves deal big damage and require hefty wind-ups, so you better make all your attacks count.

Male or Female Byleth choices available!

Fans of Fire Emblem: Three Houses will be delighted to hear that Garreg Mach Monastery is the brand new stage. Cameos of the game’s other characters cheer you on as the stage whisks you across the school grounds. Alongside the new stage are 11 new music tracks which can be played Smash’s other Fire Emblem stages – a nice touch.

Mii Fighter costume reveals were surprisingly fun this time round too. We got Altaïr from Assassin’s Creed, Rabbids from Rayman Raving Rabbids, and MegaMan.EXE and ‘X’ from the Mega Man franchise. Best of all though, Cuphead made it in! His Mii Gunner costume looks stunning and purchasing him will also unlock the music track ‘Floral Frenzy’ to enjoy while smashing.

To cap off the presentation, Sakurai finally revealed more information on the next wave of DLC fighters, and in standard Sakurai fashion, he shattered our expectations. Fighter Pass Vol. 2 will bring 6 new fighters to Smash. No one was confirmed at this time, but all the slots have already been locked in by the team according to Sakurai.

Again, Byleth and all the other features mentioned above will will fall into player’s hands on January 28th. Just a little longer to wait until we get to try everything out for ourselves.
