While the convention was graced with the presence of some major upcoming games, it was no shock to see that a lot of titles had given E3 a miss. Eagerly awaiting fans were left a little disappointed by the absence of some highly anticipated titles. Here are some of the major games missing from E3 2017.
- Death Stranding
E3 2016 saw the return of one of the superstars in the gaming industry: Hideo Kojima. He brought with him a bizarre looking game, Death Stranding, with the cinematic trailer as mysterious as the man himself. The revelation that both Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen would be starring in the game surely got the hype train chugging. The PS4 exclusive was expected to reveal further details at this year’s E3, be it another trailer, some gameplay or at least a possible release date. But Hideo Kojima had other plans. Not even a tiny speck of Death Stranding was seen at E3. It looks like fans will have to wait some time before they can get their hands on the game, because the game will be ready when Mr. Kojima says so.
- Red Dead Redemption 2
This one was a real bummer. Rockstar Studios announced Red Dead Redemption 2 in Fall 2016. The fans of the original Red Dead Redemption went into a frenzy, as they would once again experience the ‘Old Wild West’ in all its rustic glory. And it was certainly expected to show its face at E3. But Rockstar Studios itself was absent at the convention. Even Sony’s or Microsoft’s conferences failed to show anything related to Red Dead Redemption 2. While earlier reports had predicted the game to release in Spring 2018, looks like the cowboys will be further delayed from riding into the market.
- Cyberpunk 2077
Stop testing us CD Projekt Red, will ya? The studio behind the masterpiece known as ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’ had announced this game way back in 2012. It had the public really excited as they were shown a new futuristic setting, with a cybernetic woman decked out with arm-blades, battling it out with the police. That’s it. Really, that’s everything anyone has on the game right now. While this was earnestly expected by the gaming community to hit E3, that certainly did not happen. Looks like the game is still in production and we will have to wait for next year’s E3 to know anything about it.
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake
One of the most beloved games spanning all generations, Final Fantasy 7 is one of the best games ever made. And when Sony dropped that gorgeous trailer of the remake two years ago, nostalgia hit the gaming community harder than ever. They would once again be able to play as Cloud Strife and wield that Buster Sword, running through enemies like old times, albeit in a real-time fashion this time around. The excellently rendered trailer promised new exciting gameplay and immersive graphics, but alas the developers Square Enix decided to give E3 the slip. There’s still no information about the whereabouts of the game and looks like we’ll have to sate our appetite with that sole trailer.
- Bloodborne 2
Fans of the Dark Souls franchise and Bloodborne have been praying feverishly for Bloodborne 2 to be announced. The Souls-like game garnered a lot of fan-following around the globe. The game redefines the term “difficulty”. Known for its excellent game design, satisfying combat and huge tough boss battles, fans have been raving for a sequel to the Playstation exclusive. They were certain that this year’s E3 would fulfil their wishes but it was not to be so. There seems to be no concrete plans for a sequel, but who knows? Something might drop at PSX in December.
- The Last Of Us Part II
Probably the biggest title to snub E3, new content pertaining to this game was certainly expected. The crowd had gone crazy last year when Sony had shown the trailer out of the blue. The Last Of Us is one of the best games ever made, with a hooking narrative and spot-on characters. Naughty Dog, the developers of the original game, seem to have a reason for this. Neil Druckmann, the writer and Creative Director of the sequel took to Twitter, saying that the TLOU Part II was not shown at E3 because they wanted Uncharted: The Lost Legacy to take the limelight. If anything related to TLOU Part II had been revealed, it would certainly have dwarfed the Uncharted spin-off game. The studio wanted every game to have its own time to shine.
- A Major Xbox Exclusive
Microsoft dropped the bomb at E3, revealing the Xbox One X, the most powerful console on the planet having full 4K capabilities. What Microsoft failed to do was announce a new major exclusive that would make use of the console’s behemoth power. While Forza Motorsport‘s newest title was shown on the Xbox One X, Microsoft has milked the Forza Motorsport, Halo and the Gears of War series to their full extent. Mind you, these are still excellent games but Microsoft needed to announce a new exclusive to accompany the release of a new console. The company needs a new game mascot to be the flag-bearer in the next few years to come.
