Today during a press conference in Tokyo, SEGA announced Yakuza 7, officially titled Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Most shocking is the massive change being made to the Japanese crime drama/beat-em-up: combat is now turn-based.
Keen followers of Yakuza related news will remember that back in April, Yakuza 7 was teased with a small gameplay trailer showing off RPG-like combat. At the time it was gathered that this was a look at the first post-Kiryu Yakuza title, but that the footage shown off was merely a whacky mini-game or sequence the series is known for. Well, it turns out that developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio was giving us our first look at Yakuza 7’s core gameplay, a bold change to the beloved series that’s bound to be divisive.
Yakuza 7 Brings a Bold Change
After SEGA dropped Yakuza 3 on PlayStation 4 over in the west, with Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5 to come by February 2020, it makes sense for them to reveal Yakuza 7 now. With Kiryu’s saga over, it follows that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio wants to make a bang with Yakuza 7, as it will serve as an entry point to the long-running crime drama. Tokyo Game Show is coming up on September 12, so we’ll probably get a more in-depth look at how the game works then.
Yakuza 7 is coming to PlayStation 4 on January 16 in Japan and is coming to the west later that year. Are you optimistic about this change up or do you want our beloved Kiryu back? Let us know down in the comments!
