Blizzard just dropped an origin story video on YouTube for the new Overwatch Hero 31, Sigma. The hand-drawn, animated video explains Sigma’s origin as a scientist and his descent into madness. There’s even a glimpse at Sigma’s in-game character model at the end of the trailer, which several hints about his abilities. You can watch the full Sigma origin story below on YouTube.
Overwatch Hero 31 and Class
Throughout the video, you can hear Sigma talk about black holes and gravity, which will obviously be tied to his in-game abilities somehow. We still don’t know much about how Sigma will actually play, but there are several hints dropped in the video. First, Sigma looks like he’s mimicking a conductor of music at the end of the trailer. He waves his hand around like he’s holding a baton and conducting an invisible orchestra. This leads me to believe that music might play a role in his combat or at least that it will inspire his voice lines and emotes. Second, we can see him levitating a couple of metal objects that materialize out of nothing. These could be used for damage or they could be manipulated into a shield of some sort. We still don’t know any concrete details, so we can only guess.
As for his role, it’s possible that Sigma could be a tank class or even support class, but we still have yet to receive a confirmation either way. I don’t think he will be a damage class due to Ashe already filling that role and the sheer number of DPS characters we already have in Overwatch. Although we don’t have a release date for Sigma, Blizzard teases that he will be “coming soon.” Jeff Kaplan previously teased that it would take a little longer for Hero 31 to appear, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
