Kamala Khan, AKA Ms. Marvel, to be Playable in Marvel’s Avengers

Today’s the last day of New York Comic Con, a day where nerds from all over assemble to cosplay, attend panels, buy merchandise, and celebrate nerd culture in all its geeky glory. During the event, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics announced a new playable character in their upcoming Marvel’s Avengers: Kamala Khan, otherwise known as Ms. Marvel, not to be confused with Captain Marvel who recently starred in a movie featuring Brie Larson.

In the game, Kamala is a young fan of the Avengers who comes out to the unveiling of the new Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. During the ceremony, there’s an accident in the building that leads to many casualties, as well as Kamala receiving the ability to shapeshift. This leads to the disbanding of the Avengers and an Incredibles-esque delegalization of superheroes. Kamala, being a bright-eyed superhero fan, embarks on a journey to reunite the Avengers to fight new threats that face the Earth.

As Kamala Khan has not yet had an outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (although there are allegedly plans for her in the works), Crystal Dynamics likely chose to give her a spotlight in-game to set themselves apart from the more well-known heroes. Ms. Marvel also hails from New Jersey, and to my awareness, is the first major hero to be from my home state, so I am in huge support of this. More importantly, Kamala is also the first major Muslim hero to appear in a large Marvel title, and it’s great to see this kind of representation in such a large franchise.

Marvel’s Avengers will be releasing May 15th, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows, and Google Stadia.
