The Last Encounter is an intergalactic roguelike twin-stick shooter from Exordium Games, that features extensive weapon customization. Set in the far away future, our world is invaded by a superior alien race, and all hope falls to humanity’s last remaining pilots to fight through the games lively, procedurally generated galaxies. The Last Encounter is said to take around eight to twelve hours to complete and will feature nine separate galaxies all of which conclude with their own boss fight.
Every time you take out a hostile, you are rewarded with the game’s currency, which you can then use to buy components to upgrade your ship at any shop you find, but components only last for a certain amount of uses, unlike your ships base weapon. These components are also hidden across each galaxy, leaving it up to you to discover and upgrade your ship on your adventure. The components allow for players to change the bullet type, firing pattern and more for each ship.
In my time with The Last Encounter, it offered an interesting but familiar take on the genre. The component system felt right at home, as it allowed me to change up how I play multiple times in my short time with the game. The combat felt great, even though at times it could be hard to manage everything on screen, as the enemies were smart, and each firing mode allowed for a new take on the game. The Last Encounter also boasts an interesting art style, as each galaxy was vibrant, in what could best be described as eye candy.
The only problem I had with the demo was the that the boss fight was bland, as it did not require too much teamwork, and was fairly easy, but other than the boss fight, The Last Encounter was a joy to demo at PAX. Overall, the game is a well rounded twin-stick shooter with plenty of content to offer. Fans of the roguelike genre should keep their eyes on this one when it releases on PC sometime this spring, and later this year on the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
