Sony Declines to Appear at E3 2020

As often happens when anyone at one of the big three so much as breathes, the internet took to rampant speculation. Some believed Sony would rather focus on their own livestreamed events to make announcements on their own time, while others argued that Sony didn’t have enough in the works to justify an E3 conference. When you consider the obsession with viewers trying to figure out who “wins” each E3, as well as Sony’s impressive lineup in 2018, it’s easy to assume that Sony didn’t want to underwhelm. However, things aren’t the same this year. E3 is still the biggest press conference of the year, and it would be the perfect time to show off the PS5 only a few months before its planned release. Unless the console is getting delayed and won’t be ready for the conference, there’s one very likely reason behind all this:

Sony’s outgrown E3. As a spokesperson reported, “we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year”, and they will rather attend other events and make stream their own announcements. We’re long past the days of E3 being the opportunity for publishers to talk to players,  so why should Sony bother presenting their newest console on anyone’s terms but their own?

And what do you think, reader? Are you disappointed Sony isn’t going to show up once again? Or are you looking forward to their new methods of showing off? Or are you sick of E3, and not planning to follow it anyway? Let us know down in the comments.
