Discord plans to “steam” past other game subscription services.

Discord, a VoIP application that focuses on the gaming community, is heralded as the “go to” communication platform for many. The company seems to be searching for a piece of the pie and developing future monetization efforts through a bold move. In a press release, Discord announced their new ambitions of providing games directly to their users through a beta version of a steam-like “Discord Store”. The store will be available in the beta phase to roughly 50,000 Canadian users and feature games from the likes of Deep Silver, THQ, and more.

“Today, we’re slowly rolling out a beta test to about 50,000 of our Canadian players and will be expanding to more over time. These players will see an upgraded version of Discord Nitro that has access to a curated selection of games along with the current subscription perks. They’ll also see a new tab in the home screen, the Discord Store, with individual games for purchase.” reads a press release.

In addition to the Discord Store, testers will get to experience the upgraded Nitro subscription service, which will curate games to choose from that are recommended by Discord for subscribers to have access to download and play. Alongside this service, discord users will have access to purchasing titles directly through discord. This is an upgraded bonus to Nitro subscribers that will mesh nicely with the current benefits they receive.

Here is a list of some of the games that will be available through Nitro, as well as retail games available in the “Discord Store”.

To top it all off discord announced their “First on Discord” titles, which will be indie games that the platform is helping to be exclusive on the application for a limited time only on discord. These titles will be temporarily exclusive for roughly 90 days before being sold on other platforms.

“For our store, we’re excited to announce we’ll be supporting “First on Discord” titles — indie games that we’ve helped bring to life. Supporting indie games pushes the boundary of creative game design and is important to innovation and the long term health of the industry. Of course, we think the games are really cool too!”
